Fire safety

  • Ensure that everyone in your party is aware of the exits from the property

  • Consider any difficulties you may have getting out, eg. at night you may need a torch to light your way; do you know where the keys are?

  • Keep all exits clear of obstructions, eg. shoes and pushchairs

  • If there are children or infirm people, plan how you will get them out

  • Check for fire hazards before you go to bed – it takes longer to become aware of a fire when you are asleep

  • Check barbeques and outside fires are extinguished before leaving unattended

  • Check log burning stoves and open fires are extinguished or stove doors are shut before leaving unattended

  • Use candles carefully – secured in a stable holder and kept away from curtains, fabrics and paper. Always extinguish candles when leaving the room or going to bed

If there is a fire, don’t tackle it yourself – get out, stay out and call 999

ELECTRICITY / Power Cuts

What to do if the electricity goes off unexpectedly

The fuse box is located in the under stairs cupboard in the reading room.

  • Check the fuses and trip switches (located in the Reading Room under-stairs cupboard)

  • If any trip switches are in the OFF position, try to move it back to the ON position. If this works, the power will come back on

  • If this doesn’t work and the trip switch moves back to the OFF position, there may be a fault with one of the appliances or house wiring circuits.

  • If the fuses and trip switches are in the ON position and the electricity is still off, then there may be a fault with the main supply. Phone the UK Power Networks on 150 or 0800 316 3105 for advice. The postcode is NR23 1NN.
